Biography of Gustavo Caldas
Gustavo Caldas was born and raised on the beach in the community of Solar do Unhão, which is located in Northeastern Brazil in the state of Bahia in the city of Salvador. Gustavo has always loved surfing and culture, as a young child he started learning Capoeira from his uncle, Leandro Caldas Santos, also known as Pissiquinho or Psiko Capoeira. At the age of 15 Gustavo, Jailson Santos aka Jay, and Darlan Nery started teaching kids and teens in their community, and at the age of 16 years old, Gustavo was also working as a life guard.
In 2004 Gustavo auditioned, was accepted and selected to travel internationally with ‘BFB’ Balé Folcórico da Bahia, which is Brazil’s premier folkloric dance company, directed by Walson Botelho aka Vavá. Throughout his work in BFB, Gustavo trained in Capoeira, Afro-Brazilian dance, classical ballet, modern, Martha Graham and Horton Technique, music, history and dance of Orixás. Between 2004 and 2006, Gustavo performed in Brazil, and completed 3 international tours with Balé Folcórico da Bahia: first throughout the United States, second in Torino, Italy and third in Reggio Emilio, Italy.
In January of 2007, Gustavo returns to the United States to have his first tour with Viver Brasil, which is an award winning dance company based in Los Angeles, California that is firmly rooted in the traditional and contemporary forms and techniques of Salvador, Bahia, Brazil. Once the tour ended, Gustavo was invited to work with many other companies all over United States: Blankenship Ballet, Ballet Folclórico do Brasil, Super Duper Arts Camp, Santa Monica College, Nego Gato, and many others. In August of 2007, Gustavo was hired by a Los Angeles based company, Tribe and Culture, to choreograph and dance in an Acacia dance workout DVD, “Dance and Be Fit: Brazilian Body,” which was awarded “Best Dance DVD 2009” by Health Magazine.
Since July of 2009, Gustavo has lived in New York in the Mid-Hudson Valley where he teaches Capoeira, music, and dance classes, steadily works throughout the year performing and teaching workshops by several different dance companies, Capoeira groups, public school districts, and universities throughout the US and internationally. He recently taught at SUNY New Paltz, North Carolina A&T University, and continue to teache workshops at Marist College annually. In January of 2012, he performed on an international tour with The Vanaver Caravan to Udaipur, India, and Sweden.
